Peat moss improves the structure of the soil mix, helping with moisture retention. Can substitute with coconut coir. Commonly available at your local garden center or home store.
Use some of your garden's soil to add its native microbes to your soil block mix. Sift to less than 1/2 inch (to remove big chunks).
It can be purchased or homemade. Can use worm castings. Should be well-decomposed and sifted to less than 1/2 inch (to remove big chunks).
30 Units Sphagnum Peat Moss (Or coconut coir)
1/8 Unit Garden Lime
20 Units Coarse Perlite (Can substitute coarse sand)
1/4 Unit Greensand
1/4 Unit Blood Meal
1/4 Unit Rock Phosphate, or Colloidal Phosphate
10 Units Garden Soil (sifted 1/2 inch)
20 Units Compost (sifted 1/2 inch)
Mix the peat moss and lime together first, then add remainder of ingredients.
This is intended for use with the 2-inch and 4-inch soil blockers, and doesn't require a fine particle size. For simplicity, I also use it with the Micro (3/4-inch) blocker
16 Units Sphagnum Peat Moss (Or coconut coir), sifted 1/4 inch
1/8 Unit Greensand (omit if needed; don't substitute)
1/8 Unit Rock Phosphate, or Colloidal Phosphate
4 Units Compost, sifted 1/4 inch
This is intended for use with the Micro (3/4-inch) blocker, with finer particle size and no perlite. Allows more even water retention for germination.
I use these two sizes. There is also a 4-inch soil blocker available for purchase, but I reuse 4-inch nursery pots instead, as the pot helps with moisture retention when plants are getting bigger and more thirsty.
This one also gets a lot of use during our seed starting seasons. These blocks allow you to be really efficient with the space used to germinate seeds. This is really key if you need space on a heat mat OR if you are pessimistic about your germination rate and want to start some extras! Through Amazon
This gets a lot of use around our garden. I start items with large seeds or fast growth in these (squash family, beans/peas) and "pot up" the rest from the micro soil blocker. Through Amazon
This one is great for seedlings that don't need a lot of time between planting indoors and transplanting outside in the garden. Lettuce and beets work well in these (and it avoids needing to bump them up to a different block) Through Amazon
